Cycling Initiatives

Cycling is a key strategy outlined in our third Local Transport Plan offering many benefits locally and nationally, including contributing to improved air quality, reduced noise pollution, healthier lives and less congestion. We are committed to encouraging cycling for local journeys in and around neighbourhoods.

The initiatives aim to overcome barriers to cycling by improving confidence when cycling in traffic and providing people with the skills and confidence to cycle safely and responsibly. Sessions encouraging people to try cycling off-road at Palmer Park Velodrome are also available for people with health problems and those with children.

Cycling can also help increase independence in later life and amongst disadvantaged groups, including those suffering from health issues by supporting them to carry out daily activities, reducing the risk of falling and supporting stress and weight management. Reading is a partner in the research project 'cycle Boom' led by the Oxford Brookes and the University of Reading. The study aims to develop a better understanding on how our towns and cities shape older people's experience of cycling in later life.

More information on the initiatives offered by the Council can be found on the proceeding pages.
