Taxis

There are two types of taxi: hackney carriages and private hire vehicles. Generally, hackney carriages (black cabs) can be hailed in the street or operate from taxi ranks whilst private hire vehicles can only operate on a pre-booked basis.

The council sets fares charged by hackney carriages, whilst private hire vehicles operate on the basis that the fare is agreed between the driver and the customer.

About Hackney Carriages and Private Hire Vehicles

  • Both Hackney Carriages and Private Hire vehicles are required to carry assistance dogs accompanying a passenger without additional charge

  • All Hackney Carriages and Private Hire vehicles are licensed by local authorities

  • All new Hackney carriages are wheelchair accessible and should be equipped with ramps

  • It is a regulation that all new Hackney Carriage drivers are trained in the use of ramps and restraints for carrying disabled passengers
