Concessionary Bus Passes

Residents within the Reading Borough are entitled to apply to the Council for a concessionary bus pass as detailed below. Residents within the Reading urban area who live outside of Reading Borough should apply to their local authority, either Wokingham Borough or West Berkshire Councils.

If you are a Reading Borough resident aged 65 years or older, you are entitled to a concessionary bus pass which allows you free travel on all local buses in the Reading urban area at any time of day.

This entitlement also applies to Reading Borough residents who cannot hold a driver's license on medical grounds or who suffer from certain disabilities, including blindness, deafness and disabilities which seriously impair the person's ability to walk.

Reading Borough residents whose sixtieth birthday is on or before 5 April 2010 (date of birth on or before 5 April 1950) are entitled to a pass allowing half-fare travel between 4:30am and 9:00am and free travel after 9:00am on all local buses in the Reading urban area, from the date of their sixtieth birthday up to the age of 65.

Reading Borough residents whose sixtieth birthday is on or after 6 April 2010 (date of birth on or after 6 April 1950) should use the Government's 'State Pension age calculator' to check when they become eligibly for a concessionary bus pass. A link to the 'State Pension age calculator' is provided below. Once eligible, applicants will be entitled to a pass allowing half-fare travel between 4:30am and 9:00am and free travel after 9:00am on all local buses in the Reading urban area, up to the age of 65.

In addition to travel on all local buses in the Reading urban area, your new concessionary bus pass will allow you free travel on local buses anywhere in England between 9:30am and 11:00pm on weekdays and at any time on weekends and bank holidays.

If you receive Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit or Income Support (excluding job seekers allowance) or if you are accompanying someone with an eligible disability, you may also qualify for free bus travel within the Reading urban area.
