Transport Plans and Strategies
Cycling in Reading
Reading Borough Councils Local Transport Plan identifies cycling as a key way to travel sustainably, which offers many benefits and can contribute to the local and central governments agreed Shared Priorities and wider objectives:
- Improving Accessibility;
- Tackling Congestion;
- Safer Roads;
- Better Air Quality;
- Climate Change;
- Public Health;
- Social Issues
Due to the importance of cycling in delivering the Local Transport Plan, Reading Borough Council has produced a Cycle Strategy. The purpose of the strategy is to provide a framework for both expanding cycling facilities to improve accessibility and also promoting cycling to encourage more frequent use of this mode of travel. RBC aims to provide better information to both existing and potential cyclists to enable them to make more informed choices regarding the type of route appropriate for their journey and ability. This is planned through carefully designed maps and route direction signing that will provide journey time information and give a clear indication of the type of facilities on the route as well as route characteristics. High priority will also be given to continuity in providing signing for cycle routes, particularly along branded routes, where signing will be colour coded to match route maps for easy way-finding. A programme of infrastructure improvements and additional secure cycle parking locations will be identified as the routes are established.
If you are uncertain how best to get from A to B, experienced local cyclists at Reading Cycle Campaign may be able to devise a route for you. Cycle maps are available from Civic Centre.
